Alcaraz the Avenger in the last eight, Sinner unwavering

Both players easily advanced into the Indian Wells quarterfinals on Tuesday with straight-set wins over Fabian Marozsan and Jannik Sinner. Carlos Alcaraz defeated the Hungarian to get revenge for his defeat at the Italian Open last year. Sinner also won his 18th consecutive match.

With a 6-3 victory, Alcaraz never gave Marozsan any problems. He dominated forehands and held service with assurance, moving one step closer to defending his championship in the California desert.

“I won’t lie, I was anxious before the match,” Alcaraz said.

The two-time Grand Slam winner must first defeat Alexander Zverev in order to advance to the semifinals, where he might face Australian Open champion Simon Sinner. In a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 triumph, the big-serving German sixth seed thoroughly exhausted Australian Alex de Minaur.

In windy circumstances, Sinner prevailed 7-6(4) 6-1 against American Ben Shelton in the second set and had little opposition in the third to keep his spotless record intact in 2024.

Iga Swiatek, the top seed in the women’s division, defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-1 6-2 to go to the last eight, where she will face Caroline Wozniacki, the former world number one. Earlier on the day, Wozniacki defeated fellow mother Angelique Kerber with ease, 6-4 6-2.
